Traveling through history and art

Old Tokaido Road Passes Over Hakone During the Edo period (1603-1868), the Hakone Checkpoint played an important role of watching over the people who traveled along the Tokaido Road linking Edo (modern Tokyo) with the ancient capital Kyoto. On the old Tokaido move from cedar-lined avenues, walk a cobbled road, drop by the Amazake-chaya Tea House and then once again onto the cobblestone road and the avenue of cedar trees. Listening to the gentle whispers of the birds and breeze, breathing in the aroma of the flora, slowly savoring each and every step. If on a storyteller’s guided tour of this town, this road, it feels almost like crossing through time and watching the people of the Edo era pass right before your eyes. Bowing in thanks to an unnamed shrine that has watched over people and carries the feelings of the people of the Edo era. On sunny days it even provides views of Lake Ashino and Mount Fuji beyond it, while also enables working up a sweat.
